It’s all going quickly downhill for the Sri Lankan cricket team. From contact brawl to the team failing to put up a fight against a second-string Indian team, the problem seems to never stop for the Island nation. The contract issue is a long-standing one. It started when the team was about to embark on a limited-overs tour to England. The Lankan players were not happy with the amount paid to them by the Sri Lankan Cricket Board (SLC) and refused to sign the new contracts. And now, the SLC’s worst fears might come true as the players have written a letter to SLC asking to pay their old dues as they have been facing problems in repaying home loans and insurances.

In the letter, the players wrote: “Due to the new contract, we have not been paid any kind since January 2021. The players are not clear about the new contract. They should be informed about this in writing. Under the new contract, the salary of the players has to be cut by 30 percent,” as told by Cricket Next.

In the month of May-June, the Lankan players also hired a lawyer in defense to fight with SLC, with regards to the annual payment. But it seems the efforts bore no fruit. Now according to the reports, the Lankan players are in a dire state of financial crunch and some have even postponed their marriages. On the other hand, others are struggling to pay house installments and insurance for their parents.

Notably, SLC will only offer tour contracts till the end of this year as a punishment for their behavior over new contracts. This ensures that Test cricketers will not be paid till the end of this November.
