Sri Lanka cricketer slapped with charges of rape in Sydney

In a shocking piece of news for the entire cricketing fraternity, senior Sri Lankan all-rounder Danushka Gunathilaka has been slapped with the charges of sexual intercourse without the consent of the victim. The media reports in Australia have learned that a 29-year-old lady was in connection with the cricketer through a dating app.

It all occurred earlier this week somewhere in Sydney. A report from the Australian understands that,

“Police confirmed the international cricket star, 31, was arrested at a Sussex Street hotel at about 1 am on Sunday over the alleged incident in Sydney’s east last week. Detectives from the State Crime Command’s Sex Crimes Squad and Eastern Suburbs Police Area Command commenced a joint investigation following reports a 29-year-old woman had been sexually assaulted at a home in Rose Bay.”'

Subsequently, the 31-year-old would be produced in the Court of justice later today. Notably, Sri Lankan departed for Colombo without having Danushka Gunathilaka with them which was scheduled earlier.

The Panadura-born southpaw was included in the Sri Lankan squad and later on, he was ruled of the eighth edition of the 20-20 World Cup as he sustained an injury. Although he remained with the World Cup squad even after being officially ruled out and got replaced by Ashen Bandara.

Talking about cricket, Sri Lanka recently played against England in their last super-12 match and lost the match by four wickets. Earlier, they lost to Namibia shockingly by a margin of 55 runs.
