South Africa women defeats India women to go 2-1 up in the series

A magnificent century from Lizelle Lee helped South Africa women beat India women by 6 runs (DL method). Opting to bowl, South Africa jolted India with an early blow as Jemimah Rodrigues was dismissed on the second ball of the match for 0. Poonam Raut and Smriti Mandhana, the two warriors of the 2nd ODI stitched a 64 partnership for the second wicket before the latter departed for 25. Raut managed to put on another solid partnership, this time with the skipper Mithali Raj.

The duo added 77 runs before Mithali Raj’s stay was cut short by Anne Bosch for 36. Raut followed soon after a well made 77. Harmanpreet Kaur and Deepti Sharma scored 36 each as India ended their innings at 258-5. 

The target was just about par and South Africa needed a good start to get them into the driving seat. They got one as Lizelle Lee and Laura Wolvaardt added 41 runs for the 1st wicket. Lizelle Lee looked in prime touch from ball one and played some cracking shots. She then stitched another 40 run partnership with Lara Goodall. Mignon du Preez joined Lizelle Lee post the departure of Goodall and the duo added 97 runs for the third wicket, putting the final nail in the coffin for India.

Lee ensured that she took South Africa home and remained unbeaten on 132. South Africa were cruising to victory before the heavens opened up and the match was called off with South Africa women declared winners by 6 runs. India women now need victories in both the remaining matches to win the series. The 4th ODI will be played on Sunday, March 14th
