Sourav Ganguly opens up on Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s future in ODIs

Former Indian captain and analyst Sourav Ganguly has stated that the veteran duo Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma should continue playing ODI cricket as long as they are performing, courtesy of their exceptional record in this particular format.

Recently, there were reports suggesting Kohli and Rohit would be retiring from ODIs after the completion of the Australian tour in November. When asked about the same, Ganguly stated that he wasn’t aware of those reports.

"I'm not aware of this, can't comment on this,” he said during the AWL Agri Business Ltd Event.

However, Ganguly was quick to reckon that their performance should decide their spots in the playing XI. Notably, both Kohli and Rohit are stalwarts of the game, especially in the fifty-over format.

"It's difficult to say. Whoever does well will play. If they do well, they should continue. Kohli's one-day record is phenomenal, even Rohit Sharma's. Both of them are phenomenal in white-ball cricket,” he added.

Furthermore, Ganguly also talked about India’s expectations at the Asia Cup 2025, scheduled to start on September 9 in the United Arab Emirates. While Ganguly was satisfied with India’s red-ball heroics, he is expected to put up stronger efforts in the white-ball format in the showpiece event.

“They are in the middle of a break. After the IPL, they played five Tests, and now they will play the Asia Cup from September 9. India is very strong, and if they are strong in red-ball cricket, they are even stronger in white-ball cricket. So, in my opinion, India are favourites, and beating them on those good Dubai wickets will be very tough,” he noted.

Additionally, Ganguly also talked about Shubman Gill’s future as a Test captain, stating that his future would be full of promise. “He's India's Test captain, and his future is full of promise,” he said.
