Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly has heaped praise on Rohit Sharma, who won the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 and ICC Champions Trophy 2025 as a captain. However, he felt that by the time the ICC World Cup 2027 commences, Rohit will be 40 years old.
Speaking at an event, Ganguly asserted that even Shubman Gill will face a similar situation when he is a 40-year-old, giving the instances of legendary sportsmen like Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and others.
“Rohit has been an outstanding leader. In the last two years, he has won the T20 World Cup and the Champions Trophy. I think what has gone in the selectors’ mind is in two years’ time, when they go to South Africa, he will be 40 years old,” Ganguly told reporters at an event of Annapurna Snacks.
“Ten years down the line when Gill gets close to 40...he will also have to face this situation. In sport, whether it’s Federer, Sampras, Nadal or Maradona, they will all have to finish someday,” he added.
Furthermore, Ganguly backed the selection committee and team management’s decision to pick Shubman Gill as the new ODI captain, adding that Rohit will play a crucial role in grooming the young captain. Moreover, he also stressed on the Indian veteran batting duo Kohli & Rohit to get more game time in domestic cricket.
“It’s not a bad decision to promote Gill. He has shown a lot of talent (as a batter and a captain during the Test series) in England. I think it has been done in consultation with Rohit. It’s a fair call. Rohit can keep playing, and you keep grooming a young captain,” he observed.
“It depends on how fit they remain and how they perform. Whatever opportunity they get (they must use), they have to play domestic cricket. Otherwise, you lose touch, form, and contact,” he concluded.
