Former Indian captain and analyst Sourav Ganguly has opened up on the Bengal batter Abhimanyu Easwaran not getting a chance in the recently concluded Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England, which India levelled by 2-2.
Notably, Easwaran received his maiden call-up to the Indian Test squad in December 2022 for the Bangladesh tour under the captaincy of KL Rahul. However, he is yet to get his chance in the playing XI for over two and a half years.
Interestingly, 15 other players have debuted for India after Easwaran got his maiden call-up to the Indian squad. Now, speaking to TOI, Ganguly has asserted that No.3 would be the perfect spot for Easwaran.
"He has age on his side. I still believe he will get his chance. I feel batters like Yashasvi, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Ravindra Jadeja, have all got runs. It's only the No.3 slot that looked a bit fragile. Maybe Easwaran will be tried there," Ganguly told the Times of India.
Most recently, Easwaran’s father also publicly expressed his frustration on his son getting omitted repeatedly. He asserted that Gambhir assured that son would get his chances in the playing XI. However, things didn’t go as per discussion for Easwaran.
"Gautam Gambhir, when he spoke to my son, he assured him, see you, you're doing the right kind of things, you'll get your turn, you'll get a long run. I'm not the one who will push you out after one or two matches. I'll give you a long rope," Abhimanyu Easwaran's father said in an interview with Vickey Lalwani on his YouTube channel (via India Today).
India went on to level the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2-2 after defeating England by a narrow six-run margin in the Oval Test.
