Sourav Ganguly on what the new India Test captain needs to do

New India Test captain Shubman Gill received encouraging words from ex-India skipper Sourav Ganguly ahead of the five-Test series between India and England that begins on June 20.

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. These are the last two captains of India in Test matches. It won't be simple to fill their shoes. However, Shubman Gill must do that.

The 25-year-old must lead a team that is transitioning. It's possible that Jasprit Bumrah won't play in all five of India's Test matches against England. Some members of the team, such as Sai Sudharsan, have not played in a Test match, and at least half of the team has not played in England.

However, there is doubt over Shubman Gill’s place in the India XI itself. Gill has played 3 matches in England and averages just 14.66, with 28 being his highest score. But above it all, Gill has to justify his place in the team.

And Sourav Ganguly believes the same.

“He still has some work to do as a Test batter,” he told RevSportz.

In Test cricket, Gill averages a pitiful 35.05 despite his extraordinary skill. And after thirty-two games. This sample size is large. Additionally, Gill needs to establish himself as a batter; otherwise, the pitchforks will be removed before the conclusion of the Test series between England and India.

Shubman Gill can be India’s new Test hero: Sourav Ganguly

Ganguly also thinks Gill should have a chance to shine during a five-match Test series in England. Kohli made his name by scoring a ton of runs in difficult situations like these.

The former Indian captain believes that people will celebrate Gill as a hero and overlook his past failures if he takes a strong stance and leads from the front.

“These are conditions where he needs to score runs. He is a young captain, and he will learn. Imagine if he does well. How good is it? He will be hailed as a hero. You live for such situations as a player,” Ganguly added.

The first test of the series will be played at Headingley in Leeds from June 20 onwards.
