Former Indian all-rounder and commentator Irfan Pathan has stated that the Indian vice-captain, Shubman Gill, will try to prove his point by playing aggressive cricket in the forthcoming Asia Cup 2025 campaign, as Team India has switched to an aggressive brand of cricket in the shortest format of the game.

Speaking to the media ahead of the start of the Asia Cup, Irfan also asserted that Gill shouldn’t have any issue getting into an aggressive role in the top order, adding that he has that ability and has a lot of range in doing what the team demands from him.

“What we have seen this season, the way he played, the amount of runs he scored in last few seasons in the IPL as well. Now the Indian team has gone to (scoring at) higher strike rate,” Pathan told the media in a Sony Sports Network interaction.

“They want to just be very aggressive. I don’t think so there will be an issue for Gill to start playing (an) aggressive role and do what team demands of him. More than anyone else in this group, Gill will go there and try to prove a point in terms of playing aggressive cricket. He has the ability and he has got a lot of range,” he added.

Notably, Gill had an exceptional IPL 2025 season for the Gujarat Titans as he went on to score 650 runs from 15 innings at an average of 50 and a strike rate of 155.87 with six half-centuries. Furthermore, the former all-rounder felt that Gill’s promotion to vice-captain couldn’t have happened without Suryakumar Yadav’s consent.

“Shubman Gill being selected as vice-captain could not have happened without the consent of Suryakumar Yadav,” he concluded.
