Shubman Gill is set to be named India’s next ODI captain and it could be as early as the team’s next series in the format against Australia. Rohit Sharma is currently at the helm of the ODI team but he has retired from Tests and T20Is and is unlikely to hold on to the position for long.

There are concerns over his long-term future and it is even being reported that the forthcoming limited-overs tour of Australia in October where India will play three ODIs could be his last. With an eye on the ODI World Cup in 2027, the BCCI is understand to have been keen to give Gill enough time to settle in on his captaincy.

According to a report in Revsportz, it is only a matter of time before Shubman Gill is named the captain of the Indian team in ODIs. He is already the Test skipper and has been named the vice-captain in T20Is.

Rohit Sharma cleared he’s not retiring after CT 2025 triumph

Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma had made it clear in the press conference after the Champions Trophy triumph in March 2025 that he is not retiring from the format anytime soon. But he was the Test captain at the time as well and hadn’t retired from the longest format.

Things have changed a lot since then and the call isn’t entirely in his hands. With India’s next ODI set to be against Australia in October, only top performances are likely to keep him in the team or else the selectors might end up taking a tough call, keeping the future in mind.

Coming back to Shubman Gill, the BCCI seems to be slowly moving towards its old philosophy of ‘one captain for all formats’. The traditional philosophy has worked well for India before with MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli successfully leading the team for so long while Rohit Sharma did so only for a brief period.

All eyes will now be on India’s squad announcement for the Australia tour which is likely to happen after the end of the Asia Cup.
