Team India Test captain Shubman Gill has revealed that the former Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar and Australian talismanic batter Steve Smith have helped him in terms of technical adjustments ahead of the England tour in the Anderson Tendulkar Trophy.
Speaking exclusively on JioHotstar, Gill also asserted that, though there was pressure of not performing up to the mark outside India, he was feeling very confident in terms of his practice on the tour. He disclosed that the common advice from the duo was to defend straight and score square.
“There was pressure of not doing well outside India. But I was feeling very confident in terms of my practice, mentally, and what positions I was getting into. I spoke to Sachin Sir and also took the (phone) number from Matthew Wade (who played with Gill in the IPL team) and spoke to Steve Smith. Both said the same thing: defend straight and score square,” Gill told Hotstar.
It’s worth noting that the advice from the batting duo helped a lot as Gill amassed 754 runs in five Tests on the England tour at an average of 75.40 with four hundreds. He ended the Anderson Tendulkar Trophy as the leading run-scorer, which includes an exceptional double century.
Delving into the details of Gill’s technique, there was an issue with his batting in the past - His slow weight transfer onto the front foot. Interestingly, star pacers like James Anderson, Tim Southee, Kylie Jamieson, Matt Henry, Mohammad Shami (in IPL), Scott Boland trapped him in front and got him bowled in the past with good-length nipbacker deliveries.
It’s important to note that Shubman Gill will lead the Indian Test team in his first home Test series against the West Indies in the two-match Test series at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
