Shubman Gill reveals Gautam Gambhir’s message during England tour

The newly appointed Indian Test captain, Shubman Gill, has revealed the message the whole team received ahead of the start of the England tour. Gambhir had informed the whole team not to think of themselves as a young team, but as a gun team, which helped the team to excel.

Notably, India finished off the five-match Test series at 2-2 with the Manchester Test ending in a draw. While Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma announced their Test retirements, many former cricketers and the cricketing fraternity didn’t have a lot of hope on the Indian team that is into transition.

"We had the option of taking the new ball, but the way they were bowling, we thought they could do the job. We had wicket-taking options. We wanted them to score 30 singles; we knew they were under pressure. We wanted to take the game deep. The way Brook and Root were going, not many teams in the world would have been given a chance," Gill told reporters.

"Thinking about other players put less pressure on me because I was focused on everyone, not just myself. That helped. Gautam Gambhir told us not to think of ourselves as a young team, but as a gun team," he added.

Furthermore, Gill heaped praise on the Indian pacer Mohammed Siraj, who played a crucial role in Jasprit Bumrah’s absence in the Oval Test, scalping nine wickets in the match to turn the game in India’s favor.

Notably, Siraj ended the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy as the leading wicket-taker, pocketing 23 wickets from 10 innings. Interestingly, he was the lone bowler to bowl in all five Tests of the series.

"He (Siraj) is a captain's dream. Coming in five Test matches, every ball, every spell that he bowled gave his all, and every captain, every team wanted a player like him. We are very fortunate to have him in that team,” Gill stated.
