Former England batter and commentator Nasser Hussain has stated that the Indian Test captain Shubman Gill doesn’t have the on-field aura of former Indian skippers Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Notably, Gill was nominated as the new Test captain after the retirements of the veteran duo of Rohit and Kohli.
Interestingly, Team India suffered a five-wicket loss to England in the opening Test of the five-match series at Headingley, Leeds, despite scoring five centuries to start off the series on a backfoot.
Gill was seen changing the fields too often and chasing the ball, according to Nasser Hussain, stating he was more reactive than proactive. Furthermore, he added that it looked like Team India had two or three captains on the field in the Leeds Test.
"I saw someone finding his way. He (Gill) didn't quite have that on-field aura of Rohit and (Virat Kohli). I thought he followed the ball a lot and was reactive rather than proactive," Hussain said on Sky Sports.
"When Rohit and Kohli captained, you looked down and you immediately knew who was in charge but when I looked down in this game I saw two or three captains, captaincy by committee," Hussain added.
Moreover, Hussain reckoned that Team India, led by Gill, suffered the drubbing due to the dropped catches and the lower-order batting collapses in both innings. Interestingly, as many as eight chances were put down by the Indian fielders in the Leeds Test. Also, they collapsed badly in both innings after being in handsome positions.
"The collapses concern me. In India they have had spin-bowling all-rounders that are magnificent - Ravi Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel - but in England they are still looking for a seam-bowling all-rounder who can bat If they keep going 6-31 and 7-41 this could be a quick series," Nasser Hussai observed.
