Former England captain and commentator Michael Vaughan has stated that the newly appointed Indian Test captain Shubman Gill didn’t look technically tight or call like he used to be on the fourth day of the Lord’s Test.
While Gill is still leading the run-scoring charts in the ongoing series with 607 runs from six innings, he couldn’t create an impact with the bat in the Lord’s Test, scoring 16 & 6 runs in both innings. However, Vaughan hailed India’s efforts on Day 5 with the willow.
"Shubman Gill did not look as technically tight or calm as usual when he came out to bat on the fourth evening, but his team fought so hard on Monday in a fabulous Test,” Michael Vaughan wrote in his column for The Telegram.
Furthermore, the former England batter is expecting an interesting and thrilling end to the five-match series with India having a domination over England in terms of sessions won so far. He further stated that England brought the best out of them after the on-field heated moments on Day 3, involving Gill.
"This is shaping up to be an unforgettable series, because the teams are evenly matched and there is rancour in the air. India are 2-1 down, but you’d have to say they’ve won more sessions than England. But Stokes and England’s spirit means they have won two matches they could have been well-beaten in,” he added.
“When things got spicy on the third evening, I felt that brought the best out of England for the remainder of the game,” he wrote.
Also, Vaughan heaped praise on the English skipper Ben Stokes, who bowled a total of 44 overs in both innings combined to scalp a total of five wickets in the match, putting up the player of the match performance.
Stokes’s bowling was exceptional. To be hitting 90mph aged 34 after all his injuries, with the back spin he gets on the ball, the movement, the angle in, the relentless length. He looked horrible to face, and his ball to get KL Rahul was very special,” he concluded.
