For the unversed, Gill has completed his rehabilitation program at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru. Furthermore, the T20I vice-captain also met all the fitness and performance criteria for his return to professional cricket, with his recovery process closely monitored.

Notably, Gill suffered a neck spasm during the first Test against South Africa at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata and was briefly hospitalised at a nearby hospital. However, he was later ruled out of the Test series and the ODI series that followed.

After being ruled out of both series, Gill underwent progressive batting and ground conditioning as part of his rehabilitation programme at the CoE in Bengaluru. He was scheduled to play his final RTP (Return to Play) clearance match on Saturday, December 5, which he cleared quite comfortably to make his comeback.

In Gill’s absence, India suffered a Test series whitewash to South Africa. Interestingly, this was India’s second consecutive Test series whitewash at home to a SENA nation after earlier losing to New Zealand by 0-3 last year.

With Gill cleared for a comeback, he would be available for selection in the five-match T20I series. He is expected to open the innings alongside the explosive opening batter Abhishek Sharma in the series.

It’s worth noting that Gill was elevated as the vice-captain of the T20I side ahead of the Asia Cup 2025 campaign, and he would be acting as a deputy to Suryakumar Yadav in the forthcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2026 in India and Sri Lanka.
