On Saturday, October 4, Indian Test captain, Shubman Gill, has been appointed as the new ODI skipper, replacing the full-time captain Rohit Sharma for the forthcoming three-match ODI series against Australia Down Under, starting on October 19 in Perth.
This three-match series will also serve as the comeback series for the talismanic batting duo of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Notably, the duo last played international cricket in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Dubai in March 2025.
According to a report published on ESPNCricinfo, the Indian Senior Men’s Selection Committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, met in Ahmedabad to unveil the ODI and T20I squads for the upcoming Australia limited-overs tour.
With the ICC ODI World Cup scheduled to be played in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia in 2027, selectors believe that Gill will have enough time to settle down as the new ODI captain. It’s important to note that the decision was taken collectively by the chief selector in coordination with India head coach Gautam Gambhir and BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia.
For the unversed, Gill became India's Test captain after Rohit Sharma retired from the longest format of the game in May ahead of the Anderson Tendulkar Trophy in England. India will play three ODIs in Australia, starting on October 19, 23, and 25.
It’s worth noting that Rohit became the full-time ODI skipper from December 2021, taking Team India to 42 wins in 56 ODIs. He led India to the successful Asia Cup 2018 title win as a stand-in captain. Also, he won the Asia Cup 2023 title as a full-time captain.
Also, he led the Indian team to the finals of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 in Ahmedabad against Australia. In March 2025, he took the Indian ODI team to the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 title win in Dubai.
