According to a report published on NDTV, the Indian skipper was admitted to the ICU for observation at the Woodlands hospital in Kolkata. Moreover, Gill has been ruled out for the remainder of the first Test at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

Furthermore, his participation in the second Test is also unlikely. According to another report published on RevSports, Gill has been under the supervision of Dr. Saptarshi Basu with a medical panel formed as a precautionary measure.

The panel also includes a critical care specialist, neurosurgeon, neurologist, and cardiologist to ensure the Indian skipper is closely monitored. Moving into the details of the incident, Gill retired hurt after facing only three balls on the second day of the game.

He was seen in discomfort near his neck after playing a sweep against Simon Harmer, before calling the medical team. Eventually, he was taken to a hospital in Kolkata for scans. However, the BCCI later confirmed that the skipper was suffering from a neck spasm.

"Captain Shubman Gill had a neck injury on Day 2 of the ongoing Test against South Africa in Kolkata. He was taken to the hospital for examination after the end of day's play. He is currently under observation in the hospital. He will take no further part in the Test match. He will continue to be monitored by the BCCI medical team. Gill's injury has raised doubts about his continued participation in the series, though the team management has emphasised that no risks will be taken with his fitness. His absence leaves India facing significant challenges in terms of leadership and batting depth," the BCCI update stated..
