Team India ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of cricketing action for at least three weeks due to a left rib injury he sustained during the Sydney ODI against Australia in the first innings on Saturday, October 25.

Delving into the details of the incident, it happened during the 34th over of the Australian innings as Iyer completed an impressive catch to dismiss the keeper-batter Alex Carey off Harshit Rana for 24 runs.

Carey, who tried to hit the ball down the ground, got a top edge that was caught outstandingly by Iyer between backward point and deep third man. However, he had hit the ground hard during the process of holding the catch and immediately caught his ribs in immense pain. He was eventually taken off the field, and he wasn’t seen on the field for the remainder of the innings.

"Shreyas was taken to the hospital for scans during the match itself. As per the initial diagnosis, there has been a jerk, and he will have to be out of action for a minimum of three weeks. He will have to report to the Centre of Excellence on his return. Further reports are awaited before one can conclude if he will require more time for recovery. If it is a hairline fracture, then it might take longer. It is too early to say. If it is three weeks before RTP (Return To Play), then there is a chance that it could be touch-and-go before November 30 (start date of the ODIs against South Africa)," stated the source, as quoted by India Today.

While Australia managed to post only 236 runs in 46.4 overs, India finished off the chase in 38.3 overs with nine wickets in hand. Rohit Sharma (121*) and Virat Kohli (74*) stitched a 168-run unbeaten stand to take India to a consolation win.
