Shreyas Iyer, India's star batter, has provided an update on his recuperation after injuring his lower rib cage while taking a catch during the third One-Day International against Australia in Sydney.
During the third ODI, Iyer made a spectacular diving catch while running from backward point to eliminate a dangerous Alex Carey off a Harshit Rana delivery.
However, when he dived, he fell awkwardly on his elbows and ribs, primarily on his left side. After making the grab, he was in excruciating pain, gripping his ribs as he was led back to the pavilion by medical personnel.
On Tuesday, the BCCI released an update on Iyer's injuries. According to a BCCI statement, a second scan on October 28 revealed substantial improvement in Shreyas' fitness, and he is on his way to recovery.
The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, will continue to monitor his progress.
"Shreyas Iyer sustained a blunt injury to his abdomen, resulting in a laceration of his spleen with internal bleeding on 25th October during the third ODI against Australia. The injury was promptly identified, and the bleeding was immediately arrested. His condition is now stable, and he continues to be under observation.
A repeat scan done on Tuesday, 28th October, has shown significant improvement, and Shreyas is on the road to recovery. The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, will continue to monitor his progress,” the BCCI statement read.
Shreyas Iyer posts on social media for the first time since his injury
After rupturing his spleen during last week's third ODI against Australia, India's vice captain, Shreyas Iyer, is allegedly out of play for two months. To stop the internal bleeding brought on by the accident, the Indian batter had surgery.
According to the most recent reports, his condition is now stable, and early this week, a Sydney hospital took him out of the intensive care unit. According to RevSportz, Iyer will be out of competitive action for the next two months, putting him out of the three-match ODI series against South Africa at home next month.
His return for ODIs against New Zealand is also in doubt given he would be short on practice.
Sharing a story on his social media, Iyer said he is making steady progress and expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from fans.
"I'm currently in the recovery process and getting better, every passing day. I'm deeply grateful to see all the kind wishes and support I've received- it truly means a lot. Thank you for keeping me in your thoughts," Iyer posted.
