Punjab were absolutely sensational during the recently concluded mega auction. They managed to pick several top-class players. A few of them include the likes of Shikhar Dhawan, Jonny Bairstow, Liam Livingstone and Kagiso Rabada. However, they are yet to announce their new skipper.
According to a report by The Times Of India, Mayank Agarwal is likely to become the captain of Punjab. It is to be noted that he was among the two players to be retained by the franchise ahead of the mega auction. Alongside Agarwal, Dhawan’s name as captain was doing the rounds as well.
However, the franchise was keen on making the Karnataka batter the skipper even before the auction. Yet, Dhawan was someone they wanted in their side. Punjab are expected to announce their captain later this week.
“In all likelihood, Mayank will captain the side. The announcement is expected later this week. Dhawan is a welcome addition to the side and was always on the radar at the auction. He is a champion player but it seems Punjab were keen on Mayank as captain ever since KL Rahul left the team,” said an ITL source.
Agarwal has been playing for Punjab since 2018, and has been an integral part of the side. He and KL Rahul formed a formidable opening pair. As a matter of fact, the franchise retained him for a whopping amount of INR 12 crore ahead of the mega auction.
If the 31-year-old does go on to lead the team, then he will have a golden opportunity to display his captaincy skills in the biggest T20 league in the world. As far as his record in the Indian T20 league is concerned, Agarwal has scored 2135 runs in 95 innings at an average of 23.46. This includes eleven fifties and a hundred as well.
