New Zealand and Pakistan faced one another in five one-day internationals (ODIs) at the former's home following a five-match T20I series that ended in a 2-2 tie. The visitors aimed to improve upon their victory over Pakistan in a 50-over series earlier in January 2023 in an ODI World Cup Year. Kiwis, who haven't played there in 20 years, will need to get used to the Rawalpindi surface.

However, during the first ODI, a certain incident caught the eyes of the spectator. In the 32nd over, New Zealand's Daryl Mitchell had just completed his half-century off 60 deliveries. As such, he swung hard on a Naseem Shah delivery. Pakistan took a review despite every spectator knowing there was a huge gap between the bat and the ball. The review images made a joke out of Pakistan's review call. These images are flooding the internet, with fans trolling Babar Azam's man for such an amateur call.

Pakistan beat New Zealand by 5 wickets in first ODI

Naseem Shah's astoundingly economical bowling performance and Fakhar Zaman's tenth ODI century helped Pakistan easily defeat New Zealand with five wickets in Rawalpindi's opening ODI. The 500th ODI victory gave them the second-fastest team to reach the milestone after Australia, who did so in 811 games, and they were the third team to do so while doing so. After a 124-run opening stand between Fakhar and Imam-ul-Haq, Pakistan never really had a chance to fall short of their 289-run victory requirement. Babar Azam scored 39 runs as the team's captain, and wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan made a brief appearance lower in the order. They reached the finish line in the 49th over, leading the five-match series 1-0.

New Zealand achieved 288 thanks to Daryl Mitchell's second ODI century. With Will Young, whose individual score of 86 came off just 78 balls, a century second-wicket stand had laid the groundwork for a total above 300. However, Pakistan's outstanding death bowling and inability to hit long balls kept the visitors in check. The main reason for this was Naseem, who was most metronomic at the start and conclusion of the innings. His figures of 2 for 29 in the 10 overs he was given assured that New Zealand wouldn't score more than 300 runs despite looking on pace for most of the innings.
