On 7 June 2023, the much-awaited World Test Championship (WTC) final got underway between India and Australia at the Oval. After winning the toss, Rohit asked Australia to bat first. On day one, they lost only three wickets for 327 runs. Indian bowlers were horrible throughout the day.

However, on day two, they came up with a better plan as the Aussies got bundled out for 469 runs. Mohammed Siraj took four wickets while both Shardul Thakur and Mohammed Shami took two wickets each. After that, all eyes were on Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill as they came out to bat.

Rohit Sharma’s disastrous form with the bat continues

Rohit came to this clash after a poor IPL 2023 with Mumbai Indians (MI). He scored only 332 runs in 16 matches, at an average of 20.75 including two fifties. On the other hand, Gill came to this clash after becoming the highest run scorer in the recently concluded IPL while playing for Gujarat Titans (GT). He scored 890 runs in 17 matches, at an average of 59.50, including six fifties and two centuries. Not only in that tournament, Gill also smashed a century against Australia in the last Border-Gavaskar Trophy. So, fans were expecting a good start from both openers.

Notably, they gave a good start and India were at 30 runs without losing any wickets. But, on the sixth delivery of the sixth over, Pat Cummins trapped Rohit as he got caught on the crease. Thus, the Indian skipper went cheaply after scoring 15 runs off 26 balls, including two fours. Then, in the next over only, Shubman Gill got out on 13 runs off 15 balls, including two fours. On the fourth delivery of that over, Boland bowled an inswinger which Gill confidently left. The ball struck his off stump and India lost their second wicket. Suddenly, in a span of five balls, India were in a spot of bother at 30 runs for two wickets.
