Indian batsmen Shafali Verma has been a revelation since her debut. The swashbuckling opener is often compared to Virender Sehwag for his naturally aggressive batting style. Shafali was India’s highest run getter in the 2020 edition of the Womens T20 with 163 runs in 5 matches at a strike rate of 158.25, the highest among the top 10 batsmen of the tournament. Even though India women lost to Australia in the final, they were praised for their performance in the mega event.
Shafali is part of the Indian squad for the T20I series against South Africa but has been left out in the ODI series. Talking about the same, Indian skipper Mithali Raj said that Shafali Verma will get her chance.
“She definitely is in the scheme of things and on the radar. I think we need to have a bit of patience. You’ll see her very soon,” replied Mithali when asked about Shafali’s inclusion.
Shafali Verma has been touted as the next big thing in Indian cricket but hasn’t got an opportunity in the 50 over format. In T20Is though, she has played 19 matches for India and has scored 487 runs at a healthy strike rate of 146.24.
The Indian ODI squad includes several youngsters and with World Cup just a year away, the series is a great opportunity for the players to make a case for themselves. Mithali said that everyone in the squad will get their opportunity. “We have some young players in the side, and as captain, I would like to give them opportunities to show their talent.”
