Bangalore and Gujarat locked horns in the sixth game of the ongoing Women’s T20 League 2023 at the Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai. Ahead of the game, both teams had played two games but won nothing. Also, their Net Run Rate (NRR) was the lowest (-3.176 for Bangalore) and (-3.756 for Gujarat). Meanwhile, at the toss, the Ahmedabad-based team won the toss and elected to bat first.
The Orange Army had a poor start as they lost the wicket of Sabhineni Meghana on the last ball of the third ball. At 22/1, the likes of Sophia Dunkley and Harleen Doel put together 60 runs for the second wicket. They scored 65 and 67 runs respectively. After them, cameos from Dayalan Hemalatha (16), and Annabel Sutherland (14) helped the team reach 201/7. For the second time in the tournament, the Red Brigade conceded more than 200 runs with the ball.
Talking about Bangalore’s bowling, Shreyanka Patil and Heather Knight took two wickets each. On the other hand, Renuka Singh and Megan Schutt took one each.
Bangalore’s run of losses continues in the Women’s T20 League 2023
In reply, the likes of skipper Smriti Mandhana and Sophie Devine provided a great start with a partnership of 54 runs in just 5.2 overs. However, after the wicket of the former, the scoring rate went down for the next few overs. From overs seventh to 11th, the team could only score 29 runs with Ellyse Perry struggling at the crease.
Eventually, when she got out, the required run rate was going up. Richa Ghosh, who was promoted up the order, hit some boundaries but couldn’t make much of an impact. Even though the team had a player such as Shreyanka Patil, the team decided to promote the likes of Kanika Ahuja and Poonam Khemnar. This proved costly as they struggled for a few deliveries. The likes of Heather Knight (30 off 11), and Patil (11 off 4) tried well but the team fell short by 11 runs. With this, Gujarat registered their first win of the tournament.
