West Indies vs India, 3rd ODI (Image Source: Twitter)
On 1 August 2023, the stage was set for the third and last match of the three-match ODI series between India and West Indies in Tarouba. India won the series opener while the Windies made a comeback in the second game. Hence, all eyes were on this series' decider as both teams were looking for a win. However, both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli got rested again as Ruturaj Gaikwad was given a chance along with Jaydev Unadkat.
Skipper Hardik Pandya lost the toss and was asked to bat first. Then, India’s batters showed their true potential for the first time in this series as they posted a mammoth total of 351 runs for five wickets in 50 overs. Shubman Gill was the highest scorer with 85 runs while batters like Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson, and Hardik Pandya hit a fifty.
India handed West Indies a 200-run defeat in the third ODI
In reply, India’s bowlers also looked in top form as they bundled out the home side for just 151 runs in 35.3 overs. Shardul Thakur continued his form from the second game as he took four wickets for 37 runs in 6.3 overs. Mukesh Kumar also grabbed three scalps along with Kuldeep Yadav’s two wickets and Jaydev Unadkat’s one. Thus, the Men in Blue registered a massive victory of 200 runs and won the series 2-1. Gill was named the Player of the Match while Ishan bagged the Player of the Series award for scoring 184 runs in three matches. Notably, he hit three consecutive fifties in three ODIs.
After the win, the skipper, Pandya said: "If I'm being very honest, as a captain I look forward to these kind of games where some thing is on the line and not just an international game. We knew that if we failed, there was some disappointment. The way the boys came out and showed their character and at the same point of time they enjoyed it, that's something I want this team to have. In pressure situations, they have to absorb it but also enjoy it. Without pressure you can't be heroes.”
