Ruturaj Gaikwad made a strong statement ahead of the domestic season with a superb century in the ongoing Buchi Babu Trophy. On day one of Maharashtra’s clash against Himachal Pradesh, he struck a brilliant 133 runs, guiding his side to a mammoth total. Maharashtra ended the day with 440 runs on the board after being bowled out in 90 overs.
Winning the toss, Maharashtra opted to bat first but were dealt with an early blow when Siddhesh Veer departed for 22. From there, however, the day belonged to Gaikwad and Arshin Kulkarni, who steadied the innings with a commanding partnership. Both batters frustrated the Himachal bowlers throughout the day.
Kulkarni was the aggressor. He compiled 146 off 190 deliveries, decorated with 16 boundaries and one six. Just before tea, he was dismissed. By the tea interval, the scoreboard read 300/2, with Gaikwad still at the crease after bringing up his century.
Gaikwad carried on to make 133. Though he eventually fell, his contribution had already ensured Maharashtra had the foundation for a huge first-innings total.
For Gaikwad, the century is more than just another number. It comes at a crucial time as he prepares for the upcoming domestic season and eyes a return to the national setup. The 28-year-old last played for India in 2024, but mostly injuries have since kept him on the sidelines.
In the IPL 2025 season, he featured in only five matches before an elbow injury forced him out. With Gaikwad unavailable, MS Dhoni had to take back captaincy duties at Chennai Super Kings. However, the season turned disastrous for the franchise, which finished at the bottom of the table.
Now, this century will provide a big boost for both Gaikwad and Maharashtra. With a strong domestic campaign, he can push for an India comeback. In 38 first-class matches, Gaikwad has already amassed 2,632 runs in 65 innings, averaging 41.77, including seven centuries and 14 fifties.
A fit and in-form Gaikwad could play a decisive role in Maharashtra’s fortunes this season. At the same time, his consistent performances may open the doors once again for a return to the Indian team.
