Former Indian cricketer Subramaniam Badrinath has revealed the reason behind the Rajasthan Royals captain Sanju Samson leaving the franchise ahead of the upcoming IPL 2026 mini auction in December 2025.

Badrinath, speaking on his YouTube channel, has stated that the all-rounder Riyan Parag could be one of the reasons why Samson wants to exit from the franchise. Notably, Parag was the stand-in captain for multiple games in IPL 2025 whenever Samson got injured.

Also, the reports on Cricbuzz suggest that the rise of the current opening duo of Yashasvi Jaiswal and Vaibhav Suryavanshi meant that Samson couldn’t get his opening slot back in the playing XI, which could be another reason behind his departure.

“I feel Riyan Parag is the reason. If you consider him for captaincy, how do you expect someone like Samson to stay?" Badrinath questioned on his YouTube channel.

Furthermore, Badrinath also questioned Samson’s spot in the playing XI if he is traded to the Chennai Super Kings franchise. Notably, CSK has a young and settled top-order in Ayush Mhatre, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and many others.

“If Sanju Samson does come to CSK, then he could be the like-for-like replacement for MS Dhoni. Samson is a batter who can bat in the top three or four spots in the batting order. He is not someone who could fit in the number five or six spot in the playing XI. CSK are strong in those areas of the playing XI. Mhatre is settled, Gaikwad is settled, Brevis is settled," Badrinath said.

“I am not sure if CSK would do a transaction like MI did to get Hardik Pandya from GT. So even if Sanju Samson comes in, the question remains whether CSK can fit him into the playing XI," he concluded.

Notably, Samson could score only 285 runs from nine IPL 2025 games at an average of 35.62 with one half-century at a strike rate of 140.39.
