In the previous edition of the tournament, Rajasthan Royals had finished third in the points table and were knocked out of the tournament in the Qualifier 2 while Kolkata Knight Riders finished the league stage top of the table and even went on to win the championship.

Kolkata did pretty well too with Rinku Singh, Varun Chakravarthy, Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, Ramandeep Singh and Harshit Rana as their retention.

Samson will continue to be their full-time skipper for the season while KKr have found a skipper in Rahane after Shreyas Iyer was let go from the team. Both these teams did a decent job at the auctions table where they found some great picks to fill the gaps in their team and have a strong and well-balanced squad.
