Rohit Sharma to undergo fitness test on August 30; no update on Virat Kohli yet

Team India ODI captain Rohit Sharma is all set to undergo a fitness test alongside six other Indian players at the Centre of Excellence (COE) in Bengaluru on Saturday, August 30. Notably, the Bronco test hasn’t been introduced yet and is expected to be introduced later in the season.

Shubman Gill, Jasprit Bumrah, Washington Sundar, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Mohammad Siraj, and Shardul Thakur are the other six cricketers who will also take part in the fitness test on Saturday. The Indian Express report stated that there will also be a DEXA scan to test the bone density of these cricketers.

Notably, there is no update on when Virat Kohli is expected to take up these fitness tests. Notably, Kohli and Rohit announced their Test and T20I retirements and are available only for ODI selection.

“All players have to undergo a pre-season fitness Test, it’s mandatory as per the contract. These tests help the COE understand the areas the players have to work on or where they are lacking. As there was a big break (after the England Test series), the players were given sets of exercises to do at home,” a BCCI official said.

India’s T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav has already appeared for the fitness test alongside Hardik Pandya and Kuldeep Yadav. India’s next ODI series is scheduled against Australia when they tour Down Under in October. 

The Indian team’s former strength and conditioning coach, Soham Desai, had recently revealed that these fitness tests will help the medical and fitness teams to get an understanding on an athlete’s condition. 

“Look, we take these tests (Yo Yo, sprint, power, Dexa) as part of our assessments. It helps us get an idea about an athlete’s condition. For us as professionals, we are responsible to present benchmarks that are challenging yet achievable after having reviewed the team’s fitness standard,” Soham Desai had said.
