Rohit Sharma left his fans in shock a few days back as he announced his retirement from the Test format. India are scheduled to tour England for a five-match Test series, starting on 20 June 2025.
Hence, ahead of this huge series, especially considering their recent poor outing in the red ball format — both in the home series loss against New Zealand and the Border-Gavaskar Trophy loss against Australia Down Under — this news has raised the eyebrows of fans.
However, Rohit has faced several criticisms recently due to his off form with the bat in the red-ball format. Now, a video has gone viral on social media where the former Team India Test skipper was seen slamming the commentary standards in India and also drew a comparison with Australia’s commentary standards.
In an interview with senior journalist Vimal Kumar, Rohit said: “Earlier, I used to see that reporting was done on cricket itself, discussions were about the game. But now I see that it's all about how to get more views, how to make a thousand people read my article. There’s very little genuine conversation about cricket anymore.”
“These days, the way commentators speak on TV is just disappointing. When we go to Australia, their commentary is on a whole different level. It’s like night and day. Here, it feels like the goal is just to pick on a player and talk negatively about the player,” he further added.
However, this is not the first time Rohit has shared his displeasure with the critics. When he did not play that Sydney Test, he was seen giving an interview to the broadcaster, where he said:
“This is not a retirement decision, nor am I stepping aside from the game. I stood down from this Test because the bat isn’t talking. There’s no guarantee I won’t get the runs two or five months later.”
“If there’s someone with a mic, laptop or a pen, what they say doesn’t change our lives. We’ve played this game for so long. These people cannot decide when we should go, when we shouldn’t play, when we should sit outside or when I should captain. I’m sensible, mature, a father of two. I have some idea about what I want in life,” Rohit concluded.
