Indian skipper Virat Kohli has confirmed that Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill will be India’s preferred opening part for the 1st Test vs England. India were long looking for a solid opening pair that can consistently give India good starts and it seems that in Rohit-Gill duo they’ve got one. Though it’s very early to say, their performance in Australia raised hopes of them being the permanent opening pair.

Taking about the pair in a virtual conference Virat Kohli stated that they’re expecting another good performance from the duo.

“We’re looking forward to giving Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill a long rope as openers. We look forward to good starts from them in all the Test matches we play,” said Kohli in the press conference.

India tried as many as three opening pairs in the Border Gavaskar Trophy. They went in with Prithvi Shaw and Mayank Agarwal in the first Test but the poor show from Shaw saw him getting replaced by Shubman Gill for the second Test. Mayank too failed and was replaced by the returning Rohit Sharma in the third Test. The duo of Gill and Sharma looked very comfortable and gave India solid stars in the next two matches.

Shubman Gill was the star of the Indian batting and amassed 259 runs in 3 games against Australia. Kohli also confirmed that Rishabh Pant will feature in India’s playing XI for the first Test. Pant was in fine form in Australia and ended the series as the highest run getter for the visitors. He played a match-winning knock of 89 in the second inning of the Gabba Test to hand India a famous victory.
