Rinku Singh’s father passes away after suffering liver cancer

Rinku Singh’s father, Khanchand Singh, passed away on Friday, February 27, early morning, after a prolonged battle with advanced-stage liver cancer. He was undergoing treatment at Yatharth Hospital in Greater Noida after being admitted on Saturday, February 21.

Notably, Rinku is currently part of the Indian team in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2026 campaign. He left the squad ahead of the game against Zimbabwe to visit his ailing father but returned in time to rejoin the squad. After hearing the news of his father’s demise, he rushed back for the final rites.

However, Rinku wasn’t part of the playing XI for the clash against Zimbabwe as keeper-batter Sanju Samson replaced him. Dr. Sunil Kumar, spokesperson of Yatharth Hospital, said Khanchand was battling liver cancer.

"His condition had deteriorated significantly in recent days, following which he had been admitted to the hospital on February 21. He was placed on ventilator support and breathed his last early this morning," Kumar told PTI.

Masood Amini, Rinku's former coach, said that Khanchand had been battling advanced-stage liver cancer. He went on to add that Rinku's father worked tirelessly to support his family and educate his children. 

"He had been unwell for quite some time. He was suffering from liver cancer. For the past three to four days, he was on ventilator support. He started out working as a gas cylinder deliveryman and worked very hard to raise his family," Amini said to PTI Videos.

Meanwhile, the former Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh, who took his official X handle, sent his heartfelt condolences to Rinku and his family.

“Pained to learn about the demise of Shri Khanchand Singh Ji, father of Rinku Singh. This must be an especially difficult time for Rinku and his family, even as he remains committed to his responsibilities during the T20 World Cup. My heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with him and his loved ones. May Waheguru grant eternal peace to the departed soul and give strength and courage to the bereaved family,” Harbhajan Singh posted on X.
