On 8 May 2023, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) locked horns with Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the ongoing IPL. The 53rd match of the tournament took place at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. In the reverse fixture, PBKS defeated KKR. So, Shikhar Dhawan and his men were looking to double over KKR this season.

On the other hand, Nitish Rana and his men were looking for a win this time around. KKR came to this clash after a win over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). While PBKS lost their last game against Mumbai Indians (MI). Speaking of the match, Dhawan won the toss and opted to bat first.

KKR defeated PBKS by five wickets

While batting first, PBKS put up a fighting total of 179 runs for seven wickets in 20 overs. Shikhar Dhawan scored 57 runs off 47 balls, including nine fours and one six. But, other batters struggled to score as PBKS were at 139 runs for seven wickets in 17.2 overs. But, Shahrukh Khan’s quickfire cameo of 21* runs off eight balls and Harpreet Brar’s 17* runs off nine balls helped PBKS to reach the 179-run mark. For KKR, Varun Chakravarthy took three wickets for 26 runs in four overs. Along with him, Harshit Rana grabbed two wickets while both Suyash Sharma and Nitish Rana took one wicket each.

In reply, Jason Roy came in as an impact player to open with Rahmanullah Gurbaz. But, Gurbaz got out early after scoring 15 runs off 12 balls. But, Roy gave them a solid start as KKR reached 63 runs for one wicket after seven overs. However, Roy got out after scoring 38 runs off 24 balls. KKR captain, Nitish Rana played a stable inning before getting out on 51 runs off 38 balls, including six fours and one six. Thus, after 16 overs, KKR needed 51 runs with six wickets in hand. Then, Russell scored 42 runs off 23 balls, including three fours and three sixes. But, in the end, the equation came down to two runs needed from the last ball. However, Rinku Singh held his nerved and finished the game in favour of KKR. Thus, KKR defeated PBKS by five wickets.
