Prior to the commencement of the Ashes in Perth, Australia received a severe warning from former captain Ricky Ponting at the ICC Review. The former captain, who took part in the Ashes himself, predicted that there would be no draws and that the competition would be quite tight.
Ponting was fixated on his assertion that there wouldn't be any games with considerable scoreboard dragging and that the score would be tight. The ICC Hall of Famer has shared his thoughts regarding the possible outcomes of the forthcoming Ashes series between Australia and England.
Despite a close fight, Ponting believes the hosts will defeat England 3-2 in the forthcoming five-match Ashes series. Even though Australia has won the Ashes since 2018 and they have only lost four home Test matches this century, Ponting says he still believes England will battle hard in the five-match series in Australia.
Ben Stokes and his team in Australia use the 2010–11 series as a model because it is the only time England has defeated Australia in Australia in forty years. England under the Bazball regime has a lot to prove after going winless in three trips and suffering 13 losses during that time. However, do they have the strength to defeat Australia?
"I don't think there'll be any draws, just the way that England play. If there's reasonable weather through the Australian summer, we know that the biggest concern for the last 15 years has been Sydney with the amount of days we've lost there," Ponting said in the latest episode of The ICC Review.
"The fact that there's no draws. I just think that's how potentially close it could be. And obviously I'm taking everything into account there as well. The fact that England have only won four Test matches in Australia this century and I'm predicting that they're going to win two in this series. So that's how much closer I think it could be," he explained.
