According to the reports published on Dainik Jagran, there were differences ahead of the squad selection between Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir, skipper Rohit Sharma, and selector Ajit Agarkar over Sanju Samson and Rishabh Pant’s selection for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
The report mentioned that Gautam Gambhir wanted Sanju Samson, who has been in rich form, to be part of the Indian ODI squad for the upcoming ICC mega event, over Rishabh Pant, who hasn’t created a lot of impact in the 50-over format.
However, the source mentioned that Indian captain Rohit Sharma and selector Ajit Agarkar went against Gambhir’s decision and selected Rishabh Pant as the back-up keeper for KL Rahul in the CT 2025 squad.
Notably, Gautam Gambhir was largely vocal about Samson’s selection even before being appointed the Team India head coach. Importantly, Samson has scored 556 runs from 14 innings in white-ball formats since India’s defeat in the ICC World Cup 2023 final.
“Head coach Gautam Gambhir wanted the only cricketer to score three international hundreds in T20Is in the previous calendar year – Sanju Samson – to be the wicketkeeper but the captain and chief selector backed Rishabh Pant. KL Rahul will be another keeper,” the Dainik Jagran’s report read.
Before the start of the Champions Trophy, India will take part in the T20I and ODI series against England. Though the ODI squad remains the same, Harshit Rana comes in as a cover for Jasprit Bumrah for the England series. Bumrah is reportedly not yet recovered from back spasms.
India’s squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025:
Rohit Sharma (c), Virat Kohli, Shuman Gill (vc), Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant, Ravindra Jadeja.
