If reports are to be believed then IPL franchises will be allowed to retain up to four players for the IPL 2022. There was some confusion among the franchises about the number of players that can be retained for the next season, especially with the addition of the two new teams. However, it is learned that BCCI and the franchises held an informal discussion after which both parties zeroed on retaining a maximum of four players. As per Cricbuzz, a team will be able to retain three Indian and two overseas players.

“A team is set to be allowed to keep up to three Indian and two foreign players with the total number of retentions not exceeding four. There may also be a cap on retaining uncapped players - a team will not be allowed more than two,” reported Cricbuzz

It is also reported that the player purse will be set at 90 crores, which will be increased to 95 crores and 100 crores for the next two years. If a franchise opts to retain four players, they will have to spend around 40-45 per cent of its purse, which will leave them with 35-40 crore less purse for the mega auction than the franchise that decides not to retain any player.

The report further states that franchises have been informed that the two new franchises will be allowed to pick 2-3 players outside the auction. They can also pick two overseas players outside the auction if any prominent Indian player is not available. The BCCI is also likely to dump the RTM policy for the mega auction.
