Former England seamer Stuart Broad has opened up on India’s third Test loss against England at the Lord’s Cricket Ground in London, adding that the Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal’s rash shot had opened things up for England on the fourth day of the contest.
As India were set a target of 193 runs in the fourth innings, Jaiswal and KL Rahul came out to open the innings. However, Jofra Archer got rid of Jaiswal for a seven-ball duck with a top-edge that was caught by the wicketkeeper Jamie Smith as India’s scorecard read 5/1.
Terming it as a ‘really bad shot’, Broad stated that Jaiswal should’ve cut the ball over the off-side instead, as his presence at the crease would have moved the scorecard forward in the 193-run chase.
“So Jaiswal getting out, really bad shot, I’m surprised He just didn’t look to cut it over the off-side. Suddenly England are like okay, we are in. He is the player who moves the scoreboard forward. In a low chase, when you are defending, if you come to bowl and you’ve got a Sehwag, Warner, the opening batters that can take the game away from you and they up 60 for none or one off ten, the game is sort of done,” Stuart Broad said on ‘For The Love Of Cricket’ podcast.
Later, Karun Nair, who came in at No.3, got the attacking fielding set-up by England to create a lot of pressure. Eventually, Nair had to return to the pavilion after not offering a shot off Brydon Carse’s delivery to get dismissed.
“As soon as Karun Nair came in, he is someone who plays each ball on merit, then England could control it and set attacking fields, create pressure. So I thought that was a really big moment. England making that breakthrough early, Jaiswal gone,” Broad added.
At stumps on Day 4, India were reeling down at 58/4 with 135 more runs required on the fifth and final day of the game to take a 2-1 lead. However, Rishabh Pant, Washington Sundar and KL Rahul were sent back to the pavilion in the first session of Day 5.
Though Ravindra Jadeja (61*) played a valiant knock, he couldn’t get enough support from Nitish Kumar Reddy, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj as India suffered a narrow 22-run defeat to trail the series by 1-2.
