Former Indian spinner Ravi Ashwin has taken a dig at the Mumbai Indians franchise for always getting lucky in crunch situations. He took an instance when he led the Punjab Kings in 2018, and MI got lucky due to a floodlight failure, which changed the game’s complexion completely.
Notably, the Gujarat Titans got eliminated after suffering a defeat to the Mumbai Indians in the Eliminator in Mullanpur on Friday, May 30. After opting to bat, MI posted a daunting total of 228/5, courtesy of Rohit Sharma’s 50-ball 81-run knock.
However, Rohit got multiple survivals, which turned out to be lucky for the franchise as he made the most of the missed chances and bagged the POTM award. Ashwin related this to an incident from 2018.
"I've seen one thing with the Mumbai Indians, every time. In 2018, I was leading Punjab against MI. They were 80-odd for five wickets in 13 overs. They weren't anywhere in the game. Suddenly, the floodlights lost current and we had a 20-minute break. And when the game resumed, Kieron Pollard went ballistic and they went to smash around 180-200 runs," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.
"MI always gets lucky. Of course, you earn your luck. But MI always get lucky. We have to find out how they're getting so lucky,” he added.
In the chase, GT was in the game until the 14th over, but Jasprit Bumrah scalped the wicket of Washington Sundar to turn the game upside down. Eventually, the Titans had to settle for a 20-run defeat to bow out of the campaign.
Mumbai Indians will next take on the Punjab Kings in the second qualifier on Sunday, June 1. The winner of this encounter will take on the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the grand finale on Tuesday, June 3.
