Former Indian off-spinner and analyst Ravi Ashwin has announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL), ending his 16-year-long career in the cash-rich league. Notably, he bid adieu to international cricket a few months ago in December last year.
On Wednesday, August 25, Ashwin took to his social media platforms to announce his decision to quit IPL, stating that he will concentrate on playing various leagues across the globe, thanking the BCCI and IPL.
"They say every ending will have a new start, my time as an IPL cricketer comes to a close today, but my time as an explorer of the game around various leagues begins today," Ashwin posted on X.
"Would like to thank all the franchisees for all the wonderful memories and relationships over the years and most importantly the IPL and the BCCI for what they have given me until now. Look forward to enjoying and making the most of what’s ahead of me," he added.

"Chepauk’s own. The carrom-ball thiruppura-sundaran! From your first run-ups in Yellove on the dusty tracks of Anbuden to absolute spin domination in the world’s grandest arenas, you’ve given us everything,” CSK posted on X.
"You’ve pillared our legacy and made Fortress Chepauk roar like no other! You truly have the streets, Ashwin!” the franchise added.

This retirement announcement came just when there were reports of Ashwin’s future at CSK after a not-so-good season for the franchise. Notably, he could play only nine matches in the IPL 2025 season.
"Last year, I played only nine games; in all my years of playing in the IPL, that was the first year I played just nine games. I always used to play every game... so it was my first experience like that,” Ashwin told on his YouTube channel in a podcast with Sanju Samson.
"I asked for clarity from my side, but I asked for it during the IPL season itself. If tomorrow I’m not in the CSK team, it might benefit them; there’s no doubt about that. But it can’t all be about me. Right now, there is nothing in my hand. And all these rumours do not come from the player... there are a lot of layers to this,” he said.
Speaking about his IPL career, Ashwin has played a total of 221 games, scalping 187 wickets at an average of 30.22 with the best bowling figures of 4/34. Moreover, he accumulated 833 runs with the highest score of 50.
