“He doesn’t want to open” - Ravi Ashwin opens up on rumours of Prithvi Shaw joining CSK

Ravichandran Ashwin fuels the Prithvi Shaw to CSK rumor, suggesting the opening spot is free because Ruturaj Gaikwad prefers batting at No. 3. He believes Shaw is "definitely on the radar" after his domestic comeback.

Former Indian off-spinner and analyst Ravi Ashwin has shared his opinion on the rumours of former Indian opening batter Prithvi Shaw joining the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for the upcoming IPL 2026 season.

Interestingly, Shaw has accumulated 1892 runs from 79 IPL innings at an average of 23.94 and a strike rate of 147.46. Across seven years, he has represented the Delhi Capitals franchise and couldn’t find bids from any franchise in the IPL 2025 mega auction.

“I won’t deny it, he’s definitely on the radar, everyone will say that I leaked inside information. I don’t have inside information; this is a random guess. Ruturaj Gaikwad doesn’t want to open. So, Prithvi Shaw’s doors are definitely open,” Ashwin said on his YouTube Channel.

“You look at all the players that CSK has picked in the past, the likes of Ajinkya Rahane, who went unsold; they value people with experience and skills,” he added.

“Shaw is a big tick box. Last year, he didn’t have a great time, but this year, he’s showing signs. Not just CSK, any team will want to use the opportunity to pick Shaw this year and make a statement. Talents like Shaw shouldn’t go to waste; he should be putting on display in front of a packed crowd,” he concluded.

For the uninitiated, Shaw’s career has been nothing short of a rollercoaster ride, which has involved good performances, controversies, and a series of poor performances. However, his recent shift from Mumbai to Maharashtra has turned out to be a crucial factor for him.

Making his comeback in the Ranji Trophy 2025-26 season, Shaw smacked a double century, scoring 222 runs against Chandigarh in the recently concluded round. A lot of IPL franchises would be aiming to have the swashbuckling opener on their side in the upcoming season.
