PSL 2025: Who is Peshawar Zalmi’s captain?

Star Pakistan batter Babar Azam is expected to lead Peshawar Zalmi (PZ) once again in the 2025 edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL). PZ has won only one PSL title, which came in 2017. Since then, they have reached the final three times—in 2018, 2019, and 2021—but fell short on each occasion.

Babar took over as captain in 2023 and has led the team in 22 matches, winning 11. Under his leadership, PZ has consistently made the playoffs but has failed to reach the final. In 2023, they were knocked out by Lahore Qalandars (LQ), while in 2024, they lost to Islamabad United (IU) in the playoffs.

As a batter, Babar has been exceptional for PZ over the last two seasons. In 22 innings, he has scored 1,091 runs at an average of 54.55 and a strike rate of 143.93, including 10 fifties and two centuries. He was the second-highest run scorer in the 2023 season and topped the charts in 2024. 

Despite his consistency with the bat, he has yet to guide PZ to a title. Fans will hope that changes this season. PZ will begin their PSL 2025 campaign on 12 April against Quetta Gladiators (QG) at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.

There were rumours about Babar leaving the franchise, but in January 2025, he dismissed them in a media interaction, stating that he has no plans to leave and remains confident in the team’s chances.  He also expressed excitement about the squad for the upcoming season, highlighting new additions like Abdul Samad, Corbin Bosch, Max Bryant, and Mohammad Ali. 

With a strengthened squad and Babar leading from the front, PZ fans will hope their team can finally secure a second PSL title. Babar Azam had a disastrous Champions Trophy campaign, which played a major role in Pakistan’s early exit from the tournament. The upcoming PSL presents the perfect opportunity for him to redeem himself.

If he can maintain the same consistency as in the last two seasons and make proactive decisions in crucial moments, PZ’s chances of securing their second PSL title will be strong.
