Following the devastating terror attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, which killed 26 Indians and injured 10, Indian broadcasters Sony Sports and digital streaming platform FanCode discontinued the Pakistan Super League (PSL 2025) broadcast in India.
The incident in Pahalgam, a famous hill resort hideaway, brought back bitter memories of the 2008 Mumbai attacks and the 2019 Pulwama bombing. The attackers were eventually identified as belonging to the Resistance Front, a branch of the banned Lashkar-e-Taiba, fueling public outrage.
Additionally, on April 24, BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla underlined the board's stance on sustaining a strong national spirit, stating that India would not participate in any future bilateral cricket series with Pakistan.
FanCode and Sony Sports end PSL 2025 broadcast in India
FanCode, the official digital streaming partner of the PSL in India, had telecasted the first 13 games of the tournament that began on April 11. However, FanCode has now removed all PSL-related content from its website and stopped streaming the games as well.
Several reports claimed that the decision was taken on Friday. On Friday morning, all PSL content on the platform was leading to an 'Error' page, and then no PSL content was available on the platform. This came after FanCode was slammed on social media for continuing to show PSL games after the Pahalgam attacks.
Sony Sports, which owns India’s television rights for the PSL, acted similarly, blacking out all scheduled broadcasts and related studio shows.
As of now, neither FanCode nor Sony Sports has issued an official statement explaining the decision or indicating when or if coverage might resume.
The Pakistan government orders Indian nationals working in PSL broadcasts to leave
In addition to this, the Pakistani government has further escalated matters. The Pakistan government instructed the PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board) to return Indian nationals involved in the tournament's television production.
Following the decision, at least 12 Indian nationals working for the foreign production company in charge of the PSL telecast are scheduled to leave Pakistan soon. These individuals are mostly involved in technical and production tasks critical to the tournament's high-quality live broadcast.
The decision comes as the PSL, Pakistan's premier domestic T20 competition, is in the middle of its season, with several matches yet to be played. The sudden change is expected to affect the league's broadcast operations, as the Indian crew was a critical component of the production setup contracted through an international business.
