Shaheen Shah Afridi and his Lahore Qalandars side were condemned to their second loss of the PSL 2024 season. After losing to Islamabad United in their opening game, the current title holders lost once again this time to Quetta Gladiators.

Playing in front of his home side, Shaheen Afridi won the toss and chose to bat first. It was a curious choice as the dew is still playing a key role with the winter chill still around. With the pitches flat there was yet another run feast on offer for the fans.

Quetta Gladiators had come into the game on the back of their win on Sunday against Peshawar Zalmi. Saud Shakeel and Jason Roy’s half-centuries had helped Quetta reach 206 runs on the board. Babar Azam’s 66 didn’t help Peshawar win the match as they fell short by 16 runs.

1. Quetta Gladiators make it two wins in a row

Shahibzada Farhan led the batting charge with an amazing 62 runs from 43 balls. His knock contained four boundaries and three massive sixes. One of the sixes was a pull shot which sailed deep into the stands. Mohammad Hasnain ended the carnage when he had Farhan caught by Khawaja Nafay to end his innings.

2. Akeal Hossein and Abrar Ahmed kept Quetta in the game with regular wickets.

Fakhar Zaman was out for 6 when Hosein had him caught by Jason Roy. Abrar Ahmed then went through the defenses of Rassie Van Der Dussen for 15. Abdullah Shafique was out for 11 to give Hossein his 2nd wicket of the day caught by Sarfaraz Ahmed.

Just when it seemed like the tide was changing, Jahandad Khan came to Lahore’s rescue. The young all-rounder hit 45 runs off just 17 balls with 3 fours and 4 huge hits past the fence. This late hitting helped Lahore reach 187 runs on the board and put the visiting side under pressure.

Chasing 188 to win, Jason Roy and Saud Shakeel began well as the openers added 69 runs for the 1st wicket. The best moment of the chase was when Saud Shakeel hit Shaheen Afridi for a ramp shot which went for a six.

3. Zaman Khan provided Lahore their first breakthrough

Zaman Khan then got Lahore their 1st wicket when he bowled Saud Shakeel for 40 runs off 23 balls. The right-arm pacer bowled a perfect Yorker to get the wicket of Shakeel. Just three balls later there was more happiness for the home team.

4. Beautiful bowling performance by Sikandar Raza

Sikandar Raza bowled Jason Roy through the gate to bring Lahore back into the game. Haris Rauf then got the wicket of Rilee Rossouw for 18. Salman Fayyaz dismissed Sarfaraz Ahmed for 11. Sherfane Rutherford was bowled by Shaheen Afridi to give the home team some hope.

5. Match-winning knock from Khawaja Nafay

Khawaja Nafay brought up his half-century with a boundary off Haris Rauf to reduce the pressure. Quetta saw the winning runs come courtesy of Khwaja Nafay who hit Zaman Khan for a four. The right-handed batter was not out on 60 from just 31 balls with four boundaries and three sixes.

6. Quetta on top of the table

With this win, Quetta is now top of the PSL 2024 table with 4 points from two games. The run-rate for Quetta is also at a healthy +6.35 and they will face Islamabad next on Thursday. Shaheen Afridi and his side have a lot of work to do ahead of their next game. Khawaja Nafay was also given the player of the match for his unbeaten half-century.
