Riyan Parag in Deodhar Trophy (Image Source: Twitter)
Riyan Parag had a stellar Deodhar Trophy tournament while playing for East Zone as he scored 354 runs in five innings, along with 11 wickets with the ball. Thus, he won the Player of the Tournament award. But, before this tournament, he faced a lot of criticism for his poor run of form despite a lot of backing from teams, especially from Rajasthan Royals (RR) in IPL for the last few years.
Now, in a recent chat with the Indian Express, Parag lashed out at his critics and said: “People have a problem with me chewing gum. If my collar is up that’s a problem. I celebrate after taking a catch that’s a problem. They have a problem with me gaming and playing golf in my off time”. He also explained his actions on the field.
“Tomorrow I will fail in one game and people are going to talk s**t about me.” - Riyan Parag
Parag added: “I have an idea why people hate me. There is a rulebook about how you should play cricket. The T-shirt should be tucked in, the collar should be down, give respect to everyone, don’t sledge anyone, and I am completely the opposite. I started playing cricket because it is fun and I am still playing cricket for the fun part. People can’t digest that I am playing on such a big level, and I am enjoying it. People think I am not grateful.”
However, Riyan scored a fantastic 65-ball 95 runs knock in the final but that went in vain as his team lost the final against South Zone by 45 runs. The RR all-rounder also claimed that he has started to not care about such trolls and criticism any more. He said: “I have stopped thinking about all this. No matter what you do, people are going to have a problem with me. I had a decent Deodhar Trophy, and now people are saying what a talent. Tomorrow I will fail in one game and people are going to talk s**t about me. There is no point giving a thought to those faceless trolls. No one has come down to me and told me their exact problem with me.”
Here is how fans have reacted:
