After being removed from the ODI captaincy prior to the Australia series, Rohit Sharma has rejoined the team as a specialist batter. This is an unexpected decision given that he had just guided India to a Champions Trophy victory.

According to former Indian cricketer Pravin Amre, Rohit Sharma is the most senior player in the current lineup and should play as such. He also stated that now that the captaincy has been removed, it is the right moment for him to develop into a match-winner in the latter stages of his career.

With Gill taking over as the team's new core leadership and questions surrounding the long-term roles of mainstays Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, this ODI series has even greater significance. Amre reiterated his belief that Sharma, who was relieved of captaincy following the 2025 Champions Trophy, should be allowed to return to his previous level of commitment as a batter without being subjected to any extra responsibilities.

"He is the most senior player in this team, and I think he should play like that. Team management should also give that room for him to grow, give time now, and just enjoy his batting. I think the more he enjoys his batting, the more of a match-winner he can become. Also, he won't have the burden of captaincy, so we want the match-winner Rohit now. I think he is still capable of that," Amre told RevSportz.

He also commended Rohit's commitment to fitness, pointing out his remarkable 10-kilogram weight loss in just six months. He emphasised that a healthy body fosters a bright intellect, highlighting how Rohit's diligence has equipped him for the difficulties that lie ahead on both a mental and physical level.

"I was there when he was doing training at BKC. When I saw him, I told him that a fit body will have a fit mind, because he has worked really hard for the last six months to reduce 10 kilos," Amre commented.
