On 16 July 2023, Pakistan locked horns with Sri Lanka in the first of the two-match Test series in Galle. The home team won the toss and opted to bat first. However, all eyes were on Shaheen Shah Afridi as he was in action in the red-ball format after a long time. His last Test match for Pakistan was in July 2022. In 2023, he played in both the white-ball formats and recently, he was seen playing for Nottinghamshire in the T20 Blast.

He took 22 wickets in 14 games. Meanwhile, he had a good two-day practice game against Sri Lanka Cricket President’s XI as Afridi grabbed four wickets. Afridi came to this Test match with 99 wickets on his tally in the red-ball format. But, it did not take him long t reach the 100-mark as he dismissed Nishan Madushka on the second delivery of the third over. After that milestone, fans shared their views on social media.

After getting selected for this Test series, he expressed his excitement. Shaheen said: “I am very excited to be returning to the Pakistan Test side after a year. I dearly missed Test cricket and it was tough for me to be away from this format. After missing our entire home season because of the injury I suffered in Sri Lanka, I am eager to make an impactful comeback in the same country and complete a century of wickets in Test cricket. I want to thank my fans who have provided me support in tough times and I am ready for the challenges ahead.”

Speaking of the dismissal, Afridi bowled a back-of-length delivery that moved away. Madhuska got an outside edge and Sarfaraz Khan took the catch. Shaheen Shah Afridi was in joy after that wicket and he was seen enjoying the achievement with his teammate. However, after 5.5 overs, the game got stopped due to heavy rain. Sri Lanka were on 18 runs for one wicket as skipper Dimuth Karunaratne and Kusal Mendis were on the crease. But, after the game got resumed, he dismissed Mendis in the seventh over.
