The first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy took place in Nagpur on 9 February 2023. Finally, fans managed to see both teams India and Australia in action in the longest format of the game against each other. Before the match, all eyes were on the final playing XI of the Men in Blue as Rohit Sharma confirmed his headache regarding team selection to the reporters on the eve of the series opener.
Speaking of the match, Rohit Sharma failed to win the toss and Australia opted to bat first. Pat Cummins confirmed that Todd Murphy has been given a debut cap. On the other side, India gave debut caps to both Suryakumar Yadav and Srikar Yadav. For the Aussies, Usman Khawaja and David Warner came out to open the innings.

But, both the openers went for just one run each. Mohammed Siraj took the wicket of Khawaja while Mohammed Shami grabbed the wicket of Warner. Then, Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith stitched a partnership of 82 runs. Labuschagne scored 49 runs off 123 balls, including eight fours. Steve Smith scored 37 runs off 107 balls, including seven fours. However, Peter Handscomb managed 31 runs off 84 balls, including four boundaries. Then, Alex Carey scored 36 runs off 33 balls, including seven fours. Finally, the visitors got bundled out for just 177 runs in 63.5 overs. For India, Ravindra Jadeja was the star of the show with the ball on his comeback.
He took five wickets for 47 runs in 22 overs. Along with him, Ravichandran Ashwin took three wickets while Shami and Siraj took one wicket each. In reply, India finished day one on a high after scoring 77 runs for just one wicket in 24 overs. Rohit Sharma remained not out on 56* runs off 69 balls, including nine fours and one six. KL Rahul got out after scoring 20 runs off 71 balls, including one boundary. Todd Murphy took the wicket and it was the first wicket of his Test career. So, India will begin the second day with a trail of 100 runs with nine wickets in the bag.
