When things got tough, MS Dhoni frequently turned to the Sri Lankan pacer, who was always given the assignment of starting his four overs from the 13th over of the innings. Between overs 15 and 20, in the 2023 IPL, Pathirana took a remarkable 18 wickets at an astounding average of 13.6 and an economy rate of just 7.82 runs per over. He was a key factor in CSK's victory over the Gujarat Titans (GT) in the IPL final, which they won for the seventh time.

Due to his slingy bowling action, which strangely resembles that of his bowling idol and inspiration, Lasith Malinga, the 20-year-old Kandy pacer is known as "Baby Malinga." Pathirana distinguished himself for his IPL team Chennai Super Kings during the Yellow Army's sixth IPL championship win in the recently finished IPL 2023, making him the youngest player from outside of the country to win the prestigious trophy.

The talented pacer's 50-over debut in ODI cricket didn't go as planned, as he was bowled for 17 runs in his first over. He had difficulties keeping his line and was regularly pushing the deliveries to the leg side during the 16th season of the IPL as well.
