Mumbai continue their trend to lose their opening game of the tournament. Fans witnessed a thriller as Delhi beat the Mumbai-based franchise with four wickets. Amidst all the hype around their top-order, it was their lower-middle order that won them the game.
After winning the toss and electing to bowl first, Delhi's bowlers leaked runs in the powerplay overs as Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma looked really positive. It was only during the eighth over when Kuldeep Yadav managed to dismiss the Mumbai skipper.
As a matter of fact, the leggie had a game to remember as he proved to everybody why people rate him so highly. After getting limited opportunities for Kolkata, he was superb on Sunday. Yadav picked three wickets in his four overs, and only gave 18 runs.
Yet, it was Ishan Kishan who stole the show as he scored an unbeaten 81 from just 48 deliveries. His knock included 11 fours and two sixes. The five-time finally scored a decent total of 177-5 in the first innings. After which, Delhi's Tim Seifert looked like he was going to get a big score in the second innings, but perished after scoring 21.
Delhi went on to lose three wickets during the powerplay overs, and scored 46. As far as Mumbai's bowling is concerned, then Basil Thampi and Murugan Ashwin were simply sensational. Although the Rishabh Pant-led side kept losing wickets at regular intervals, Prithvi Shaw tried his best to ignite some life into this chase, but was dismissed for 38 in the ninth over.
However, things quickly changed when Axar Patel and Lalit Yadav started to play the big shots out of nowhere. While everyone were expecting Mumbai to win their opening encounter, the Delhi-based franchise made a spectacular comeback. A 24-run over by Daniel Sams in the 18th over was the final nail in the coffin for them. Patel (38 off 17 balls) and Lalit Yadav (48 off 38) saw their team through. At the end, Delhi chased the total with 10 balls to spare. Twitter users were quick to react to the game, and had heaps of praises for Kishan. The likes of Yadav, Patel and Thampi were appreciated as well.
