“I was slightly surprised with the batting order” - Parthiv Patel opens up on India’s poor batting show vs USA

Former Indian keeper-batter Parthiv Patel has slammed the Indian middle-order batters for their poor batting approach when top-order wickets were down early in the powerplay overs against the USA on Saturday, February 7, in Mumbai.

Speaking exclusively on Star Sports, Parthiv asserted that the Wankhede wicket was a bit tacky and wasn’t on the expected lines. However, he added that the middle-order batters should’ve assessed the situation and batted accordingly instead of going for poor shots.

"There was definitely a scare for sure. I thought the wicket wasn't as expected. It was a slightly tacky wicket. That's when batters had to put their heads down and try and give themselves a bit of time. I am okay if the top three are batting the way we have been batting. However, if we lose two wickets early, we have to assess the situation and try and get to a respectable total," Parthiv Patel said on Star Sports.

Furthermore, Parthiv noted that Rinku Singh should’ve been promoted up the order instead of Shivam Dube. Interestingly, Dube suffered a golden duck while Rinku Singh could play at a strike rate of 43.

"I was slightly surprised with the batting order as well. We have seen Rinku Singh is someone who can actually hold one end and try and get as many runs as we want. He has always got those fifties when the chips were down. That's why I was surprised to see Shivam Dube coming ahead of Rinku Singh," he added.

India was tasked to bat first after losing the toss and they were quickly reduced to 77/6 in 12.4 overs, losing the top and middle-order batters. However, Suryakumar Yadav (84*) stitched a crucial partnership with Axar Patel as India ultimately posted 161/9 in 20 overs.

In the chase, the USA could score 132/8 in 20 overs, losing the game by 29 runs. Mohammed Siraj scalped a three-wicket haul while Arshdeep Singh and Axar Patel secured two important wickets apiece.
