Amidst the growing concerns of Coronavirus, the 2021 edition of the Asia Cup was postponed. It is now learned that the tournament will be played in two consecutive years - 2022 and 2023. Also, according to Cricinfo, Pakistan is likely to host the next edition of the Asia Cup.
The tournament is most likely to be played in a T20 format. This year as well, it was supposed to be a T20 affair to help the participating teams prepare for the T20 World Cup.
Hosting Asia Cup this year had many issues. Even if the COVID situation was not as worse as it is at the moment, India wouldn't have participated in the tournament due to their England tour.
Earlier, Pakistan Chairman Ehsan Mani confirmed that if India qualifies for the World Test Championship, the Asia Cup will be postponed.
"Asia Cup was set to go last year but it got postponed to this year. Right now, it looks like Asia Cup won't be going ahead as the WTC finals are set to go ahead in June. Sri Lanka had said that they would try to host the tournament in June". Mani told the reporters in Karachi.
"The dates are clashing. We think the tournament would not be going ahead, and we might have to push the tournament to 2023".
Later, Sri Lanka authorities announced that the Asia Cup 2021 has been postponed due to the COVID situation in Sri Lanka.
“Due to the prevailing situation, it will not be possible to play the tournament in June this year,” Sri Lanka Cricket chief executive Ashley de Silva said.
If the Asia Cup is held in Pakistan, the Indian team is most likely to skip the tournament. It will be interesting to see if the Asian Cricket Council can convince the BCCI to send their team to Pakistan or they move the tournament out of Pakistan to some other neutral venue.
